MICROSTATION EXPERIENCE LOADING V8i VERSION 829 (SELECT)

BACKGROUND

My experience with uStn began with the old INTERGRAPH.  That was in 1980 and it later transcended to Bentley when Bentley published their first version of uStn (Microstation) somewhere around Version 3,which I still have, for the crude versions of mini-computers first introduced. Mine was a Tandy.

Versions J, X, V8 then V8i developed over the next 20 years. Subsequently, it became necessary obtain yearly software "maintenance" services from Bentley at an approximate cost of $700 a year after your purchase investment. I own 2 seats at a cost of about $3500 each 10 years ago. The future is unknown but I do not expect future users to be able to purchase their software, more than likely the plan with be "rental" with software somewhere in a cloud. Thts just my musing, but I will not be operational at that time. Over the years I have probably incurred a cost of more than $20,000.

VERSION V8i .443

Personal Bentley software utilization has been version 443 for the last 3-4 years or so. My principal machine is a Windows 7 Professional. The machine itself is an HP Pavilion Elite HPE with 6GB of memory with  a very slow 900GB hard drive at 7200 rpm and three USB backup drive.  All my data storage is on a separate machine, an HP with minimum capabilities except abundant backup. Although both a PE & LS, my predominant realm of  public service has been land surveying. Bad experience with non-paying clients in engineering can be financially catastrophic be cause the fees are much larger. Land surveying is much simpler survey, draw the map and collect upon delivery. Much less risk.

Let me add here the HP elite had many software programs and quite frankly I was "too busy" to parse those not is regular use and for many years I ran IOIO registry checker each day then got lazy.

Then the business plan changed due to an accident that left me physically challenged.

Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3125574. There also exits one thru March, 2016; However, if you are not careful Windows update will try to install all 173 updates.

VERSION V8i .829 Series 4

These upgrades were unnecessary for minimally complex projects; however, in order to maintain income in this poor economy my principal services had to change and a need for more  graphics capabilities became necessary. Thus I decided to download Series 3, about 800 GB.  Went well both downloading and installation until:

AND Then Series 4:

from my experience if you have this type error, CLEAN THE REGISTRY. See below.

So I found the subdirectory but not the parent in the registry. Thus I contacted my support group.

Hopefully their superior knowledge with this "1603"  would limit my downtime. Really 1603 is a user cancelled error and it refers to "1602". Well my expectations were not met. The tech support I was referred to was located in Australia. One message a day for the next 10.  Even a "remote installation" session resulted in a 1603.

His goals were therefold:

  • no antivirus
  • user controls reset and use "Administrator"
  • run CCleaner.
He did and on each correspondence I was asked to verify the process. From that point my system became more and more unstable until finally I was told to "fresh clean Windows 7".  This not a task of the fainted of heart. This took me 40 hours. And at the end of the process I found that I still had a 1603, but:

Was all that was needed. Series 4

Success! Clean the registry. Was the clean Windows 7 beneficial? Not to the extent of 40 hrs; however overall I will benefit. I knew better.
